In 2016 Burundi enacted Law No.10 of 12 August 2016 of the Law on Security Rights which regulates pledges (both possessory and non-possessory) and retention of title interests. For pledges, the reform largely followed the UNICITRAL Model Law though with some important departures from it. However, Burundi adopted the non-unitary approach for retention of title interests so that they are not re-characterised as security interests. In 2016 Burundi further enacted legislation reforming Finance Leasing.
